Stainless steel right-angle gearbox for Amtra

What is the optimal gearbox for our filling installation for aggressive liquids?
This question was asked to Apex Dynamics by filling machine specialist Amtra. In this article we will discuss the installation, the most important requirements and which Apex Dynamics right-angle stainless steel gearbox was used in combination with the Siemens servo motor, which was also made entirely of stainless steel.

Amtra from Zevenbergen specializes in the production and delivery of filling machines for barrels, IBCs, containers, big bags, bottles and cans. These are often combined with a wide range of transport and handling systems for an international clientele. Amtra supplies turnkey solutions for filling and processing liquid products. The range is modular and varies from stand-alone machines to fully integrated systems for the food, non-food and chemical industries.

Filling installation for aggressive materials

Recently Amtra received an order to develop a filling installation that had to deal with very aggressive substances. This installation had to fill 300 jerry cans of 20 and 25 liters per hour with a liquid that is so aggressive that both the filling and rinsing machine (for empty jerry cans) had to be made entirely of stainless steel.

Amtra developed an installation consisting of a destacker/palletizer, which places returned jerry cans on the conveyor belt and palletizes full jerry cans. The jerry cans are then transported through a decapper, which removes the caps, removes the wrapping and tests the jerry cans for leaks. The jerry cans are then rinsed and blown dry from the top down in the drying tunnel. From there they are transported in two lanes to a stretch sleever for the product information, after which they continue to the filling machine.

In the filling machine, three jerry cans are picked up at a time by a sled, placed on a scale and slid under the filling head, where they are filled by weight. Once the jerry cans have reached the target weight, they are moved further to the discharge conveyor, where the process is repeated. The jerry cans then pass through a dopper and are returned to the destacker/palletizer, which places them on a pallet and wraps them with stretch film.

Apex Dynamics gearbox in combination with Siemens servo motor

The sled, which picks up, positions and then slides three jerry cans at a time, is equipped with a fully stainless steel combination of a Siemens servo motor and an Apex Dynamics gearbox.
The design criteria were as follows:

  • Completely stainless steel due to the highly aggressive acids.
  • Strong, an output torque of up to 270 Nm.
  • Ratio of 10:1 to reduce speed and optimize the mass inertia ratio.
  • Right-angled arrangement due to limited installation space.
  • Suitable for industrial use.

Combination AER090SM1-010-SS-FG /SIEMENS 1FS2106-6AE1(480V) met all requirements and was therefore selected. The complete installation will soon be installed at a customer in the chemical industry.
